Inflight Wi-Fi has been bad for so long that most frequent flyers stopped expecting anything useful. Starlink changes that, but it's not everywhere yet. Knowing whether your specific aircraft has it before you board is the difference between a productive flight and an expensive offline day.
What Starlink Actually Delivers
Satellite internet on aircraft used to mean Ku-band or Ka-band systems: latency over 600ms, throughput throttled across the whole cabin, speeds that collapsed during peak hours. Video calls were unusable. Downloads were slow enough to make you question whether to bother.
Starlink is low Earth orbit. Latency drops to 20-40ms. Multiple passengers can stream simultaneously. Video calls work. It's not home broadband, but it's close enough to change how you work on a long flight.
The Problem: Not Every Aircraft Has It
Airlines are retrofitting Starlink progressively. A carrier might have 20% of their fleet upgraded, which means your odds of getting Starlink depend on which specific aircraft you're on — not which airline you chose or which route you're flying.
SeatRadar tracks Starlink-equipped aircraft. When you search a flight, you can see whether the aircraft that typically operates it have Starlink installed. For routes where the equipment is mixed, you'll see which percentage of recent operations were on Starlink-equipped frames.
Planning Around Connectivity
If you're booking a long-haul flight specifically to get work done — or specifically to avoid a dead day offline — the aircraft matters as much as the route and the cabin. A confirmed Starlink aircraft changes the calculus on whether to fly overnight versus daytime. It changes whether you need to download everything before departure.
Check the aircraft history before you book. If the route you're considering shows Starlink-equipped aircraft on 80% of recent operations, that's a reasonable basis for expecting connectivity. If it's 20%, plan for offline.
